More lawyers needed but let’s not compromise on standards- Oppong Nkrumah
Minister for Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (MP) has called for the production of more lawyers in the country.
Speaking to Citi News at the call to the bar of some 305 newly trained lawyers on Friday, October, 4 2019, Oppong Nkrumah indicated that the production of more lawyers will among several other benefits help make-up for the supply deficit of legal brains in the public and private sector.
However, he cautioned against compromising on standards as the calls intensify for more production of lawyers. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah also applauded the General Legal Council for taking steps towards expanding the Ghana School of Law which will help support measures aimed at ensuring the better training of students.
“I am one of those who believe that without compromising the standards, we need a lot more lawyers and so we need to find some middle ground that allows a lot more people to get access and to have an opportunity to study because we need a lot more practitioners in the system particularly in the public services for example. The Ministries, Departments and Agencies should get to that level where we have a lot of in-house counsel but that all means that very generally we need a lot more both in the public and private sector,” he said
